Mom is Justin Timberlake. But Dad is still *NSYNC.

If pregnancy were a boy band, let's be honest: Mom is Justin Timberlake. She's doing the vocals and the choreography and the costume changes AND hitting every note while also growing an entire human from scratch.

Dad? Dad is giving solid Chris Kirkpatrick energy.

Sure, he's there and he is totally part of the group, but if someone put you on the spot and said "Quick, name all 5 members of *NSYNC," you'd probably get to him fourth or fifth. (Sorry, Chris.)

And yes, Mom is doing the lion's share of this group project - obviously. But Dad is not just in the back doing a little shoulder bounce and collecting royalties. His contributions are integral to the album.

Sperm tends to be thought of like a one-time guest appearance, but it carries half of your baby's DNA, along with epigenetic information; it helps kick off early embryo and placental development in ways that science is still actively learning about.

Mom is out here headlining the tour, carrying the physical load, and doing all of the visible work... but Dad designed the set list even if he's not in front of the mic all the time.

Fertility is not a solo act. Our culture treats pregnancy like it's something the woman needs to figure out sometimes, as if the whole burden lives in her body. Meanwhile, 40 to 50 percent of infertility cases involve male factors. This is, in fact, a duet.

In other words, Chris Kirkpatrick has a mic.

Sperm quality can be influenced by a range of things: smoking, frequent marijuana use, heavy alcohol use, body composition, heat exposure, and environmental toxins. The upside Is that sperm regenerates, so this Is not an instance where one traffic ticket will ruin the world tour (I know that was Justin and I'm messing up this already very overdone analogy, but I couldn't resist). Lifestyle changes made in the months before conception can make meaningful changes in pregnancy and fetal development.

When a pregnancy ends unexpectedly, the physical experience lives squarely in mom's body, but biologically, the embryo comes from both parents, and research suggests that paternal factors play a significant role in early development. Advanced paternal age has been associated with higher miscarriage risk, and sperm DNA quality matters in those earliest stages when everything is being built. That doesn't mean Dad is to blame (any more than Mom is); it just means you're in this together.

Additionally, the placenta Is not Mom's organ; it contains DNA from both parents. Here is where Chris Kirkpatrick is pulling more weight than anyone gives him credit for. Paternal genes are especially active in placental growth and nutrient transfer, and the placenta itself produces hormones that shape fetal growth, maternal metabolism, and insulin resistance - lots of backstage work.

Mom may be front and center with her frosted tips, but Dad is in the background helping run sound, lighting, and production.

There is also some research suggesting that paternal factors may influence things like preeclampsia and fetal growth patterns. Certain risks have been observed to shift with different partners, which points to a paternal contribution. That said, you can't look at pregnancy and say "that's Chris's fault." These are subtle influences at the population level, not lead vocals in an individual song.

Paternal habits can affect fertility and sperm quality. Frequent marijuana use has been associated with higher miscarriage risk In certain populations. Growing research in epigenetics suggests that Dad's diet, stress levels, and environmental exposures may influence how genes are expressed in the baby.

Before we give Chris a full solo album, let’s be so for real. Dad is not determining whether Mom gets morning sickness. He is not controlling the baby’s sex with his stress levels. He is not single-handedly deciding how pregnancy goes. Pregnancy is shaped by maternal physiology, fetal development, paternal contribution, environment, medical care, and, a little bit of magic and chaos.

Mom is still Justin Timberlake.

Mom is carrying the performance, the tour, and the entire franchise on her back. She’s the one doing the daily, visible, relentless work of pregnancy.

Dad is still Chris Kirkpatrick.

But *NSYNC without Chris Kirkpatrick is… not actually NSYNC. He’s part of the harmonies and the structure. Mom may be the front man, but Dad is still part of the group - even if he occasionally forgets the choreography.
